SERVING YOUR COMMUNITY- Walking Shoes Required

On Saturday, October 11, we need volunteers to help walk our neighborhoods. We will go door-to-door and simply leave information about our upcoming election. We won’t ask you to bother the homeowner - just leave the information at the door.

We will meet at 7:30 at 12450 N. 35th Ave., Suite #60 in Phoenix (Cactus & 35th Ave). Remember, more volunteers equals less work - so bring a friend to walk with you.

It is important that we get the word out about this election and it’s vital that our GUHSD community votes YES!

We will see you on Saturday!

GUHSD Governing Board calls for renewal of Maintenance & Operation Override

CITIZENS’ COMMITTEE PRESENTS COMMUNITY RECOMMENDATION TO THE BOARD

The Glendale Union High School District is currently in the fifth year of a budget override. By state statute, every five years, a special election must be held with a majority vote necessary to approve the continuation of a maintenance and operation (M & O) budget override. This continuation will not increase taxes.
The GUHSD Governing Board authorized a Citizens’ Committee of more than 90 people to review the district’s M & O budget with the two-fold goal of making recommendations on whether or not to call for the election and recommending program cuts or reductions if the override funding is not available next year.
After numerous citizens and community meetings, the recommendation was to call for a special election to renew the override funding, which will not be an increase in taxes. Should the election fail, the committee recommended reductions in the amount of $7.6 million.
In addition to recommending the elimination of educational and extracurricular programs and services, the committee discussed alternative ways to generate revenue to compensate for the shortfall if the override fails. The committee examined such possibilities as charging fees for participation in clubs and athletics, increasing event ticket prices, and increasing student parking prices.
However, the committee also realized that revenue generated from these sources is not significant enough nor are these funds sustainable to offset the need for an override.
After the committee presented their findings to the board, the Glendale Union High School District Governing Board unanimously called for a special election on November 4th for the renewal of the maintenance and operation override.

Governing Board Calls for Formation of Citizen’s Committee

Board members from Glendale Union High School District unanimously approved the formation of a citizen’s committee. The charge of the committee is to review GUHSD’s override funding and district needs.

The committee, made up of parents, community members, teachers, and students from all nine of the district’s schools, is charged to look at three issues. The first charge is to recommend whether the governing board should call or not call for an override renewal election and recommend budget reductions if an election is not held or fails. The second recommendation regarding the need for a capital outlay override election will also be made. The third charge is to investigate revenue generating options outside of override funding.

After the initial group meeting in February, co-chairs of the committee will host additional citizen meetings across the district to gather input from stakeholders. Afterwards, the original committee will reconviene in April to review community input and will make a recommendation to the board in May.
